The RPC is one of eight regional planning agencies in Louisiana. Created in 1962 by the state legislature, the Commission was designed to fulfill federal and state requirements for regional comprehensive and economic development planning. As mandated by its enabling legislation, the RPC is the legal entity whose mission is to promote the general welfare and prosperity of the entire region by harmonizing the activities of federal, state, parish, municipal and other governmental agencies in the region.

The Louisiana Recovery Authority is the planning and coordinating body that was created in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita by Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco to plan for the recovery and rebuilding of Louisiana. The authority is working to plan for Louisiana's future, coordinate across jurisdictions, support community recovery and resurgence, and ensure integrity and effectiveness. Working in collaboration with local, state and federal agencies, the authority is also addressing short-term recovery needs while simultaneously guiding the long-term planning process.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research.
