Louisiana State Health Sciences Center

lsuhscLSU Health Sciences Center – New Orleans has focused its energies along its four-part mission: Education, Research, Patient Care, and Community Outreach.  The six professional schools at LSUHSC in New Orleans prepare over 70% of the state’s healthcare professionals in a wide range of disciplines.  Moreover, the Health Care Services Division manages eight public hospitals, which are not only a unique training environment but also dynamic patient population for clinical trials.

Along with a traditional research organizational structure of its six schools, an inter-disciplinary infrastructure is overlaid using ten “Centers of Excellence”. The research activities now underway at these Centers of Excellence fuel an average of 25 to 30 inventions in a given year.

Tulane University Health Sciences Center

tulane hscThe Tulane University Health Sciences Center has four divisions: the School of Medicine, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, all in downtown New Orleans, and the Tulane National Primate Research Center in Covington, La. The mission of the Tulane University Health Sciences Center is to create, communicate and apply knowledge aimed at promoting health and preventing and treating disease. This is accomplished through programs of academic excellence in education, research and practice conducted by a diverse body of faculty, staff and students working in the basic, animal, clinical and population sciences.

Tulane University has also developed an impressive record in commercializing its intellectual property base. Comparative data from the most recently available Association of University Technology Managers Licensing Survey place Tulane University in twenty-first position among all U.S. universities in royalty and licensing fees with over $10 million in FY 2003.  It is in tenth position among all U.S. private universities and rises to seventh position when licensing and royalty revenue is normalized with annual sponsored research base with licensing income as 9.25% of its research base.

Xavier University

xavier universityXavier’s College of Pharmacy graduates excel in areas that include traditional community and hospital pharmacy practices, ambulatory care, nuclear pharmacy, home infusion, industry, research and professional organization management administration. Xavier University’s Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) was developed to provide high quality, individualized, clinical research assistance to pharmaceutical and allied health care companies in bringing their discoveries to market in the most safe and efficient manner. It also allows students of the College of Pharmacy a first hand look at one of the most important aspects of the drug development process.

Technology transfer activities at Xavier University have elicited 10 new technology disclosures, resulting in 3 issued patents, and one active license agreement.  The university has entered into seven strategic partnerships and/or joint ventures with major pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly and Co., Johnson and Johnson, Abbott Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, and Bristol Meyers Squibb and two information technology companies.  In addition, Xavier participates with Tulane University in the Center for Bioenvironmental Research and the Louisiana Cancer Research Center.

The University of New Orleans

unoResearch at the University of New Orleans is continuing at a record pace.  Currently, 45 researchers work in bioscience related areas at UNO and account for approximately $5 million in NIH funding in addition to $35 million of other sponsored program related revenue in areas such as Assisted Reproductive Biology, Conservation Biology, Population Genetics, Coastal Restoration, and Bio-nanotechnology.

The Office of Technology Transfer resides in the University of New Orleans Research and Technology Foundation and during the last three years, six biotech patents were filed and two licenses granted.  In addition, UNO has shared in several SBIR grants with St. Charles Pharmaceutical and its SBIR grants include nanotechnology as a drug delivery system.  Of particular note is its partnership with Children’s Hospital of New Orleans where it shares bio-informatics research and facilities.
