Job Description and Responsibilities

We are looking for motivated interns with an interest in bioscience research commercialization and biotechnology. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong autonomous work ethic, initiative, and maturity, and should be able to work in a small, entrepreneurial, team-oriented environment. Candidates should possess strong writing, analytical, organizational, and time management skills. Experience in technology evaluation, market analysis, scientific research or engineering, project management, or (patent) law is a plus, a basic scientific background is required. Interns will report to the New Orleans BioInnovation Center commercialization coordinator, but will interact routinely with researchers and research development facilitators at our partner institutions (LSU Health Sciences Center, Tulane University, UNO, Xavier University and the New Orleans BioInnovation Center). 

Possible internship projects may include identifying novel life science inventions and supporting their commercial development.

Specific Tasks May Include:

  • Identifying novel inventions emerging from academic research;
  • Analyzing the commercial value of inventions by performing market analysis and patent searches.
  • Assisting in the development of marketing, strategic and business plans for university-based biotechnologies;
  • Assessing/analyzing scientific and/or legal documents (scientific manuscripts, patents, …);
  • Preparing memos and presentation materials;
  • Attending project meetings;

Job Requirements

  • Basic understanding of bioscience research ((under)graduate background and/or research experience in chemistry , biology, engineering or related field preferred);
  • Working towards a graduate degree – health sciences, public health, engineering, business or law preferred;
  • Strong analytical and project management skills, with an ability to communicate effectively, excellent oral and written communication skills.

Logistics and Application Instructions

Interns are expected to be available 15-20hrs/wk for spring or fall internships, and 40hrs/wk for summer internships. Interns will be paid a $15/hr wage. Intern will work from the New Orleans BioInnovation Center - 134 LaSalle Street, New Orleans, LA. Some travel will be required, since many of the day-to-day activities will take place in collaboration with scientists on the respective university campuses (mostly located in the New Orleans downtown medical district).
